Blood Angel Army Lists

Many different army lists will "work",  they just reflect different approaches. I say you should find two or three lists that interest you, then go out there and fight three battles with each and discover how well each works for you! :-)

The trouble with taking advice from others about army lists is the same as taking advice from others about what car to drive - many will do the job, but in the end it comes down to a matter of personal taste  :-)

Please read the Blood Angel Tactical Seminar
so you can use these lists to their full potential!

NEW FEATURE!

Visit our Blood Angels message boards to dicsuss the lists you've found here, and others!

Basic outline of a 2000pt Blood Angel Army

This is but one example, there are many ways to overcome the enemy in 40k, many approaches which can succeed.

** yes I've left out the details of their equipment, I want people to experiment and find out firsthand what works for them :-)  ~ Brother Edward

I take a mix of things really, for a 2000pt battle scenario I generally take:

2 HQ choices
       HQ1 - Chaplain w/DC
       HQ2 - Sanguinary Priest w/HG
* the second HQ is taken only if I need a very powerful assault spearhead, otherwise the points can be spent on more troops or support vehicles.

3 troop choices -
2 ten man tac squads mounted in rhinos
       1 scout squad w/ ccw

* several small scout squads can be a GREAT way to disrupt the bad guys' plans - especially if they can infiltrate, and have some weapons capable of threatening enemy armor :-)

3 FA choices
     FA1 - speeder
     FA2 - speeder
     FA3 - 2 or 3 attack bikes

* sometimes I'll swap out my 3rd FA choice and put in more troops :-)

1 elite
     veteran assault squad

1 hvy
Dreadnought w/ lascannon & missile launcher (nice general fire support vehicle)
or a Predator Annihilator (against vehicle heavy opponents)
or a Baal Predator w/hvy bolter sponsons (against troop heavy armies)

These are the units which best suit my battle doctrine, with this group I can adapt to many different opponents and situations.

~ Brother Edward

* this is but one approach, there are so many different ways to succeed in this endeavor. Adapt to your enemy, and overcome them.

Or in 40K lingo
"By the manner of their death shall we know them."
I've always liked this saying for it is quite true - nids burn nicely, orks die to shooting, IG suffer horribly under our assaults, etc. etc. etc.

Sample Army Lists
here are some lists which caught my eye over the last few months on the 40k message board - each has pros and cons, each is a tool with some uses and some drawbacks. Look throught them and find a couple that you like, triple check the points (each will be a few points off I'm sure) and tweak it to your preferences. Then go play and see what worked for you, and discover what you wish you had brought - welcome to the world of making army lists. I'll tell you now there is no "perfect" army list - there are some which do well in many situations, and some which perform EXCELLENTLY in special situations - but no single army list delivers crushing overwhelming victories to you in every single game.

On to the lists!

These are in no order whatsoever.

~ SPECIAL NOTE ~
40K is geared to a 1500pt list, 1000pts is a compact force (thus chosen VERY carefully) and 2000pts reflects a full effort towards the strategy you have chosen. Therefore the lists posted here will be 1000 to 2000pt lists.

1000PT list

>> Hey everybody, I know there's been a lot of these lately but I'd really appreciate some feedback on this 1000pt regular play blood angel list.
>> Before I say anything else though let me assure you I am aware it lacks rhinos, I am waiting for the new ones to be released, so that means I have to do without them *sigh*.
>>
>> Also I am very limited in the models dept. What is listed here is exactly what I have (or will have, finishing up the final squads) so I cna't change the selections that much, so i guess I'm jsut asking for input on what the next version of this 100 pt list should be like.

>> Yes I know he's slightly tooled up with the artificer armour, I had 20 pts spare and didn't know what to do with it, my bad. I've chosen jump packs over a rhino for the DC as I really need mobility. I intend to take advantage of cover and possibly distract the enemy from turn 1 into weakening his flanks while my "lesser" troops are slightly disregarded.....hopefully, otherwise my dc makes it intact to the enemy lines. Heads I win, tails you lose!

>> As you can see I maxed out their size as I firmly believe you should never take the bare minimum troop requirement as troops are always the backbone of any army.
>> I see their roles as general purpose, missile launchers for anti-infantry/armour, and meltagun and flamer for the same reasons. Mostly fire support but if required can assault (that's why the frag grens and vet sgts).
>> I am unsure wether 2 10 man squads are more useful than say 3 lesser sized squads. Ideas? Remember I have no rhinos *sigh sigh*
>>
>>
>> Fast Attack:
>> 1 x Land speeder w/ multi-melta (65 pts)
>>
>>
>> Ah yes the land speeder, highly useful anti-armour and objective grabbing unit. It's there when you need it. I have noticed though that I could swap it for a 5 man blood angel scout squad with bolt-pistols and cc weapons, their ability to close off avenues of fire with their assaults is highly appealing to me, but I don't have the models (yet) and I am unsure if it would benefit my army more than the speeder. I am swaying to keeping the speeder as without rhinos (*sigh sigh sigh*) I lack mobility in my tactical squads.
>>
>>
>> Heavy Support
>> 1 x Dreadnought w/ storm bolter + assault cannon
>> -smoke launchers
>> total: 108 pts
>>
>> Hrm blood angels tend to be low on firepower, but this dread is rather anti-infantry, I've had the old pewter dread for some time and only got around to painting it recently. So I'm stuck with the assault cannon for now, but I don't mind, it fits very well with the fluff of blood angels preferring more dakka weapons that wreak havoc on infantry. (Accuracy through overkill)
>>
>> I see it as more of a support role, not a single spearhead unit (it would die as it attracts fire easily) but also serving as a distraction away from my other squads, the smoke launchers perhaps adding survivability. (Dreadnought, vanish!!! *poof*)

>>
>> This ahs to be the most controversial unit in my army, as it is one of those "all of your eggs in one basket" choices as it's only 5 man. I see it's role as deep striking behind enemy lines, and strengthening any charge I am making, as well as a decent anti-tank role with the plasma pistols shooting at the rear of enemy armour.
>> Plus they are mobile (which is sadly needed due to the lack of rhinos *sigh sigh sigh sigh*). I have tried shifting things around but keep coming back to this choice again, ideas?
>>
>> I would like to thank everyone ahead of time for any replies and thoughts, strategies or do's and do not's, I will purchase more guys eventually, just keep in mind my local GW limtis 40k games to 1000pts (darnit I'd prefer 1500) and this army would be (hopefully) a balanced army rdy for a myriad of missions and enemies.

1000pts

This is my final version of the infamous 1000pts Blood Angels army list I posted earlier, some
 help would be appreciated.

 Thanx

 Chaplain with jumppack, boltpistol

vet. sergeant with power weapon & frag
 grenades 331

 Whirlwind 75

 Dreadnought with twin-lascannon, missile launcher

The tactic used in this army is to get the assault squad & the DC
into the same combat simultaniously. followed by the 2 scout squads 1 or 2 turns later. The
Dread and the Whirlwind provide long range firesupport against heavily armoured and lightly
 armoured forces.

tactics

Thanks for the insight. But I think I'm gonna have to explain my tactics a bit for you.

In a nut shell the Sang Priest+ HG, the Vet squad and the rhino mounted Tac squad all speed
toward the enemy lines hopefully getting into hth in the 1st or second turn. Thats 30 marines in
rhinos BTW. The vindicator also speeds forward with the 3 rhinos to provide fire support on
the second turn and also to draw fire away from the rhinos. The 3 dismounted Tac squads will
provide fire support and move forward if necessary. and well you know what the Whirlwinds
are for. I have considered dropping the WWS for some speeders but I havent purchased and
 painted any yet.

I have played these tactics a few times and I havent lost with them yet. ;)

HQ - Sanguinary High Priest with bolt pistol, close combat weapon, auspex, jump pack 99 points

Troop - BA Scout squad with bolt pistol and close combat weapon. 5 Scouts, 1 Scout Sergeant. 91 points

Fast Attack - Land Speeder with multimelta, searchlight 66 points

Heavy Support - Whirlwind with smoke launchers 78 points

Heavy Support - Whirlwind with smoke launchers 78 points

Total: 999 points.

Deployment: Deploy Whirlwinds close together behind cover. 3 Tactical squads deploy at the front. 1 Tactical squad and the 2 Scout squads deploy behind the front, but in front of the vehicles.

Strategy: Everything sits and shoots until the enemy assaults. The front line bears the brunt of the initial assault, then the secondary line countercharges. Land Speeders and Death Company are mobile hunters that will destroy any particlarly troublesome units (such as Basilisks with indirect fire option)

Comments? Suggestions?

Note: It's an "unorthodox" Blood Angel army; it relies mostly on shooting. Oh well.

Compliments of "Let's Duel" from the 40K forum :-)

For more advice
go to the GW 40k forum and ask for help from veteran Blood Angel players.

I will not answer emails asking for army list reviews (I just don't have enough time!).
