My Best Advice for Playing 40K

My fellow gamers,

One thing that I wish I could remind players of more often (including myself) is the idea of just  having fun with 40K. With so many rules for us to try to decipher and so many choices for army lists and tactics sometimes even the best players lose sight that it's supposed to be a  game for fun, and that we should sometimes do things which please us rather than just always shooting for the victory :-) Sure there are times when we really want to focus on sharpening our skills and becoming better gamers (I mean who doesn't want to become a better gamer!) but sometimes I fear we trap ourselves by always shooting for the gold - I fear we may miss the really interesting (and fun!) things which can happen when we just play for fun :-)

Trashback's Ten Commandments of 40k
Words of wisdom pure and true, may we all learn them well!

The Ten Commandments of 40K

These are general guidelines I try to keep to during a Warhammer 40K battle. I hope beginners and grizzly old vets can understand the points I want to get across. Hopefully if you apply these points, the rest should be relatively easy!

The First Commandment
Thou shall have a cunning plan! Think about your deployment and how you are going to close with and fight the enemy.

The Second Commandment
Have a contingency plan. If everything goes Pete Tong then this little baby could pull victory from the jaws of defeat!

The Third Commandment
Make your enemy react to your moves. Always try to look as if everything is going to plan and make them change their plan. In other words take the initiative.

The Fourth Commandment
Look at your strengths and your enemy's weaknesses. Use them best to your advantage. Don't get forced into playing the way your enemy wants you to.

The Fifth Commandment
Concentrate fire on your biggest threat that's in firing range. Wipe it out and then move onto your next target. Splitting heavy weapons fire is a mistake. Once a squad has been decimated, make sure that there are no small numbers of troops hanging on. They can tie you up in HTH or continue firing a heavy weapon.

The Sixth Commandment
Have a back up to complete your mission, you might lose the unit that you are relying on to complete it for you. Understand your mission and make sure you can achieve it, If you don't think you can achieve your mission, stop your enemy from completing theirs.

The Seventh Commandment
Use the terrain on the battlefield in the best way and try to force your opponent into a bad tactical position.

The Eighth Commandment
Never help cheap troops (Guardsmen,Guardians etc) in HTH with other cheap troops. Grieve their loss later, Move away and shoot their attackers when the dust has settled.

The Ninth Commandment
Know the Rules! This is the only way you can squeeze the best out of your force. Know the special rules with your units and the overall game rules. Study hard, Fight easy! so, READ THE chuffing BOOK!

The Tenth Commandment
Be a good sport. Be gracious in defeat and modest in victory. Never get in a huff and take your models off the table (my bat, my ball, I'm going home). You only lose your dignity and you are denying your opponent their chance to congratulate you on a battle well fought. Never say die and the situation isn't normally as bad as it seems.

As I said I try to keep to these rules but it is funny just to go and kick butt!

Happiness is a hot Lascannon!
