A sentinle isn't all that good. A tau fire warrior
squad shoots 30" at strength 5 ap 5 rapid fire! With 12 fire warriors,
you can annilate any small imperial guard army! All you need now it a kroot
squad lead by a kroot shaper and commander O'shava! That should be about
$92.00 canadian without tax.

Except that you can't have O'shova and Kroot in the same army (or ethereals or drone squads for that matter). So I would recommend that you don't waste the money on him if you want any of the above. He is the only model in the Tau army with a power weapon, though, so you might want to build an army around him. Actually he's a monstrous creature but that's close to the same as wielding a power weapon (better I think). Aurion Shidhe

Battles between the Tau an any space marine chapter
would be really kewl. I'm not that experienced with the Crimson an Imperial
Fists chapters , but i think it would totally depend one what each player
had in their army lists. Compared to other armies, the space marines would
stand a better chance against the Tau, but that doesn't mean they'll win.
With the right tactics an units, the Tau could obliterate the Imperial
might.

You cannot take two plasma rifles unless you twin
link them. It will still be a good marine killer though.
[14] Tau vs. Space Marines Battle Report / explaination . (9 Replies). Korvasha[blackdragonTT@hotmail.com]. 10/25/2001 21:19 (1/5/2002 8:33) You CAN take 2 plasma guns without the twin link. Just like you can take 1 plasma and 1 flamer. It'll cost you 16pts per Plasma. Basically 2 hard points go to the plasma (one each) and 1 goes to a multi-tracker. Well let me add this, I just played a 1000pt battle between my tau (as represented by Dark Eldar Models) against my little bro's Space wolf army. (we actually played 1 1/2 battles). On the first spur of the moment battle we played meat grinder with him as the attacker. Basically our table was a card table with only 2 3/4 foot width/length and as soon as the spacewolves get into close combat the game is over for the tau. The kroot are practically useless against them. Due mainly to the armor saves and lack of power weapon style attacks. We had to clean that up short and decided on using 2, 2 3/4 ft tables for our next battle. Same mission and everything playing length wise. His army was mainly fast attack with a russ tank (proving to be his best choice) He got the first turn. His jetpacking bloodclaws and motorcycle bloodclaws came tearing across the field (staying behind as much cover as possible) and his turn ended with him about 1/2 of the way to me. My turn began. My forces were comprised of 1 Shas'o with 2 plasma guns/multi-tracker, 2 squads of 10 basic fire troops. 2 XV8's with 2plasma/multi-tracker. 2 Hammerhead Battletanks and 3 XV88's with Twin-rail and twin-plasma /multi-tracker. The reason I chose to go with so much heavy firepower was due to some sampling in the first game. I found that my fire troops would kill on average 1-2 regular space marines a turn. Which means that if I relied on them for all the death dealing, it would take 4 turns of concentrated fire just to get rid of his blood claws. however, 3 XV8's had the potential for 6 total space marine kills. averaging 2-3. The one thing you MUST REMEMBER with the Tau is their BS is absolute CRAP when it comes to firing weapons. DESPITE ALL their TECHNOLOGY...they still shoot as bad as my Tyranids....(I mean c'mon, even the fractious Dark Eldar shoot better than them) anyway, so even if 3x3 XV8's with 2 plasma/multi-tracker is 18 space marine killing shots remember. HALF of those shots will hit, (9) 5/6th of them will would wound (7.5) and if they're in average cover only 5 will fail the cover throw. So believe me, its not the 18 u would think. Though 5 spacemarines is alright killing, consider that those 3x3 XV8's costed you 3*3=9models 9*30=270model pts + 9*2=18plasma 18*16=288plasma cost + 9*5=45Multi-trackers GRAND TOTAL=270+288+45= 603pts. MORE than HALF your army is going to be spent
killing a mathematical average of 5 spacemarines (consider them to be standard
marines) 17*5=85 pts per turn. Heaven help you if he's got some guys with
Las Cannons because you plasma guns reach is ONLY 24" Theirs is somewhere
over 48" (not sure exactly). So if take into account that ALL the XV8's
in the game aghainst my brothers army were out of range the entire battle
and did NOT score ONE SINGLE kill. All the killing was done by my hammerheads
and XV88's at a range of about 30". The Fire squads helped with a few lucky
kills but mainly soaked up Leman Russ fire. So when the Tyranids face the
Tau (which have quite slow rates of fire) heaven help the world. Those
hormagaunts are going to tear them up somethin' fierce.

kesteral[]. 12/30/2001 9:03 (12/30/2001 9:03) i know its straying from
the main subject, but tau vs nids is a complete blood bath.. railguns are
able to kill warriors i 1 shot, and hive tyrants in a few turns, which
leaves the rest of your army to shoot the little bugs... unfortunately
nids have a tendancy to feild lots and lots and lots and lots of bugs,
so you wont be able 2 stop them from getting into combat, so the few gaunts
and the odd warrior are gonna tear up the tau, with the only saving grace,
being O'Shava, and kroot assaulting them when the gaunts are stuck in combat...
the piles of dead mass up... trust me..

Just like you can take 1 plasma and 1 flamer. It'll cost you 16pts per Plasma. Basically 2 hard points go to the plasma (one each) and 1 goes to a multi-tracker. You CANNOT, I repeat, CANNOT, with the emphasis on the NOT, take two the same weapons (two plasma rifles, or two fusion blasters, etc.) on one crisis suit model WITHOUT Twin-Linking them, the codex is very clear on this. The actual line reads: "It is possible to mount the same weapon system (not if it is a flamer though) on two hard points instead of one. The two weapons WILL then fire like a SINGLE twin-linked weapon. It is not possible to mount the same weapon on three hard points." What this says, basically, is if you wanna take the same weapon, it WILL, not MAY, but WILL HAVE to be twin-linked. There is no choice in the matter. Also, you can't take two twin-linked weapons, and then another weapon of the same kind, which again would give you two weapons to fire with. It's clear from their approach that GW did not intend Crisis suits to be able to fire two identical weapons in one turn. -Chaz Out

3:05 (12/28/2001 3:05) Tau battlesuit plasma rifles are not S7, they are

you have 2 of the same weapon. multi tracker lets you use 2 different weapons.

I have a 1500 pt O'shava army and currently I
dont use pathfinders. 2 key things i worked on is 1 making sure all my
battle suits had ork fighter upgrades as there is a better chance for the
enemy to get close due to deployment limitations. the upgrade is a waste
on normal tau fire warriors as their (S) attribute is incredibly low. Stealth
teams and a hammerhead with a railgun is a must. I use 3 FW teams of only
8 FW's this allows me to allocate more pts to my other units and allows
me to spread my infantry coverage a bit. My FW teams are basically roadblocks
to allow my suits and hammerhead better firing angles.

You can jump out of the woods with no difficult
terrain test. However, moving back into the woods requires a jump during
the assault phase. This means you are subject to being a jump pack landing
in difficult terrain. Don't roll any 1's.

I ally my Tau with my friend's Eldar usually just because we don't have enough points to fight a 2500pt. Tyranid army, and even if we did we'd die painfully and instantly and such. So we fight together and die painfully but we put up a good fight. If you'll humor me, I'll quote the codex: "I have followed the myriad potential futures
of the Tau with great interest. Though barely even striplings compared
to us, I feel a strange protectiveness towards them. In time I believe
they will exceed even our greatest feats and master the darkness within
their soulds."
Sounds good to me. Then again there's a page of Kroot mauling Eldar troops. So it's kind of mixed. :) ~Skau

I do recall people saying that DE sucked when they first came out. I have a friend with a DE army and he kicks ass with it. He is VERY hard to beat. So hard in fact that I have had to build my army around destroying his. I can now hold my own and actually beat him now against his Tactics. Thats what it comes down to folks. Tactics. There is no reason why your crisis suits should ever be caught in HtH. They have superior ranged weapons that should keep you at bay from any HtH enemy. They can move a total of 12" a turn for f*** sake. If they get engaged, it was a matter of poor planning on your part. Also, look at sheild drones. You take 6 of those
beauties with your crisis unit, and those 4+ invulnerable saves will have
your opponent yelling, "CHEESE !". It is going to take Tau players a little
while to adjust their playing styles to differant armies, but in time,
we will be a formidable foe. Each ass kicking we get makes us harder to
beat the next time. In Martial Arts we call it conditioning. After a month
of getting the sh*t kicked out of me 3 days a week by guys 2-3 times my
size; pain and endurance was no longer an issue. I just smile at "tough

ARMY TOTAL 1499 Basic Tactics as you may guess, are to form a pretty substantial battleline with the 39 fire warriors. I've tried to bolster the staying power of the front line by using an ethereal and Shas'uis. Two units have carbines simply if a unit needs to do some moving, I'll choose the carbine squads. Pathfinders will either be picking out dangerous vehichles, or in the case of non-line-of-sight vehichles (Whirlwinds come to mind...) moving into Close Combat to use those EMP grenades. The Gun Drone squad will most probably be used to rove about the battlines, adding extra shots at any squads getting too close for comfort. Stealth suits are most probably going to harass heavy weapons teams that have gotten too much of a commanding view. Other than that, they'll just act much like the gun drones. Crisis Team will most probably single out any
particularly elite squads and throws a ton of missiles at them. With assistance
from the commander, they should do ok at this task from round 1. Missiles
have a nice range and it's just a matter of getting that all important
line of sight. Because Crisis suits don't shoot too straight, I thought
twin link was better for the points than missile/plasma combo.

Fire Warriors need the Photon Grenades. They still die, but get a chance to strike back. Did I mention that you need to bond your teams? Without Kroot, you will need to keep one FW team back to protect your Broadsides. They are very vulnerable to deep strike. They take a while to die, but while stuck in HtH, they cannot use thier big weapons. Bond.

[14] RE: O'Shovah . (1 Replies). ArtOfWar[fearfac99@hotmail.com]. 11/29/2001 23:34 (12/30/2001 5:19) In my experience, it's better not to play him. But here's what I've noticed. DON'T put Ork Fighter on Fire Warriors. Way too expensive, and for little to no return. Only put it on your suits. If you take him, take a Hammerhead and a Broadside
team, and put lots of points into them. Beef them up and give them plenty
of defense. For instance, give Broadsides Smart Missle Systems and Shield
Generators or Shield Drones. And give the Hammerhead at least a Multi-tracker
and Decoy Launchers if not more. The weapons you equip are a matter of
personal opinion. If you're expecting lots of infantry, maybe try an Ion
Cannon and Burst Cannons.
I've heard from veteran players in the area that
you're better off taking an Ethereal in your army (which O'Shovah can't).
Personally, I'd only use Aun'Shi. He's a really good character, and he's
an Ethereal with an Armor Save. Not the best save ever, but better than
none at all.

5:19 (12/30/2001 5:19) >> In my experience, it's better not to play him.
But here's what I've noticed.
If you make an O'Shovah army make sure he's got
good support and place him close to the front line. He makes a good offensive
unit when your enemy gets close and even the plasma rifle on him can help
take pressure off of your FW teams. I'd drop the pathfinders and DF in
favor of more crisis or stealth suits and possibly better HW systems on
the squad leaders. And remember that O'Shovah had a 4+ invulnerable save
and is a monsterous creature so he's quite ideal for taking on dreadnoughts
and carnifex's that get too close provided you didnt just notice that your
broadsides or hammerhead havent shot yet. In a Farsight army a railgun
on a hammerhead is a necessity but dont forget they can still use a solid
shot if needed.

I think the drones are meant to be thought of

targeting troops behind them. In that case you'd count their "height" as

[14] Tau Tactics? . (1 Replies). DrAwer[]. 12/12/2001 16:36 (12/29/2001 0:04) Um, I have only played five games with my Tau, but I have won three of them and I think that's a good thing. (Maybe because I wasn't pleased with my jungle fighters getting their butts kicked all the time by bossy Eldars and my brother's Space Marines. I just hate the Terminators with their power fists and 2+ save that is almost unpierceable with the normal IG's weapons. As I got the Tau book on my hands the first thing I checked out was the kroot and I was pretty amazed by their low costs. I mean, they have better strenght and initiative values than catachans, the same special rules and even better guns that also count as two close combat weapons! And they even got a 6+ armour save and Ld of 8 for +1 pt and they cost only 7 pts each.. Only thing that wasn't as good was their armour value. So I decided to start collecting them. I bought the 50£ army deal and a regiment of pathfinders. Then I went playing against Tyranids and won. (And there were two players against me. O.o) Then I played against Eldar and lost by a little lucky dice my opponent rolled at the ending. He had only his wraithlord left with one wound and I had my devilfish APC. (Yes, I like to play until one of the armies is wiped out.) I had kept gunning his wraithlord for several turns until it pressed my APC into a corner and I couldn't get away from it's assault. Then I played again against the tyranids and lost and then I played two times in a row against Eldar and won both times. Maybe I should get into tactics?
[14] RE: Tau Tactics? . (0 Replies). MrDana[]. 12/29/2001 0:04 (12/29/2001 0:04) You are so right about Kroot!! In a game I played recently I foud out just how cool the fieldcraft rules are. If you can fire through 12" of trees and your opponent can't see through more than 6" then your Kroot are extremely tough to move. Krootox are also pretty good. They give an excellent boost to both the unit's firepower and close combat ability. One unit with 12 Kroot and 1 Krootox took out a unit of Blood Angels bikes with such ease that I almost wept with joy. I think my opponent was also about to cry. (Kidding!) As for Crisis suits; I have one unit of 3 with Plasma Rifles and Missile pods (doesn't everybody?), and one unit with Plasma Rifles and Fusion Blasters. I've only played two games with my Tau, and I haven't had a chance to actually fire the Fusion Blasters. I chose the Fusion Blasters because I hate it when a Dreadnought marches into your line and you don't have anything handy to stop Armor 12. Also, in theory, when combined with the rapid fire Plasma Rifles this should give me excellent Marine-stopping power at 12". Perhaps I'd be better off doing what everybody seems to be doing and swap the Fusion Blasters for Busrt Cannons, but I'm going to give my Fusion Blasters at least one more chance. Pathfinders: That extra turns movement makes for
an excellent solution for that squad with the heavy weapons that your opponent
is hiding up the back. Even if this is a bit suicidal it seemed to work
last time I played. The mistake I made - after my squad was wiped out -
was not being prepared to sacrifice the Devilfish to hold up that side
of the tables movement (Thus giving me more time to pick off bits and pieces).

So the maximum size of a Kroot unit is 40. 20 Kroot Carnivores (may include shaper), and a combination of 20 Kroot Hounds and/or Krootox. This combination would take at least 4 slots (1 Troop, 3 Fast Attack). Are Kroot Hounds worth a FA slot? I don't know. I have yet to play with a Gun Drone squad (hopefully Saturday). What do you gain? A chance to wound if the opponents fall back from close combat. What do you loose? A Gun Drone or Pathfinder unit. However, they are cheap. As for the Krootox, I think that this is a looser
in anything but an all Kroot force. The trade off is about 2 Krootox to
a Broadside or 3 to a Hammerhead. The gun is only S7, so cannot hurt a
Land Raider. It is also instant-killed by strength 6 weapons. The Krootox
also has the penalty of keeping the Kroot Carnivore squad, to which it
is attached, from infiltrating.

(12/29/2001 0:29) >> I need a Tau army that will really kick ass against
pretty much anything. I've never played a Warhammer 40,000 army and I know
Tau aren't a begginer army but I like going in for hard things.
Just one problem I faced when fighting Blood Angels was this: I set up my Broadsides with a fairly good view of the battlefield but didn't have any cover available as such. My opponent had a Land Raider with a clear shot at my Broadsides. His twin-linked lascannons hit and vaporised two of my Broadsides in one turn (>2x toughness = instant kill, + no save). So, the moral of the story is that your Broadsides
need an invulnerable save of some sort. Perhaps give them shield drone
and/or shield generators. Shield drones mean that you can still take a
multi-tracker, and allow you to take the exact same barrage without losing
a single Broadside even if your drones fail their saves. If they pass their
saves, then all is well and good for the next barrage of heavy weapons.
Another point: The first army I collected for 40k was Dark Eldar, so I know all too well about Dark Lances. These high-strength, good-AP weapons could cause some problems. We'll have to wait and see. If you face Dark Eldar at all I'd love to hear the results. Thanx, MrDana

ChazDaTaco[motty_brown@hotmail.com]. 12/16/2001 16:07 (12/28/2001 21:16) Hey, Just one little nagging question I have about the photon grenades is this: Do ALL the models in the unit assaulting you lose their +1 attack when they assault your squad carrying photon grenades? Or do your models that carry the grenades have to be in base-base contact with the enemy for their grenades to take effect? And one more thing, if your models holding the photon grenades are killed in HtH, but the assault is not over, do the enemy models re-gain their +1 attack? Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated, as me and my friend are having an argument on how the grenades work, and I wanna be able to take him on with all the advantages I can muster ;) That meaning I want to be sure the rules I want to use are the right ones, if they are not, tough cheese for me, I'll live..... though my Tau might not :P -Chaz Out

19:09 (12/28/2001 21:16) >> Hey,
Not sure what the question is. Let's assume that
one enemy squad charges one Tau squad armed with Photons. As you have to
equip EVERY model in the squad with Photons, then yes: The enemy loses
all their bonus attacks...Those not in contact only get one normal attack,
anyway.
>> And one more thing, if your models holding
the photon grenades are killed in HtH, but the assault is not over, do
the enemy models re-gain their +1 attack?
Huh? Photons negate bonus attacks for charging
-- the charge bonus only applies on the first turn of combat, not if the
combat continues on into subsequent turns...

squad would lose all extra attacks, even if some are attack a second squad.

Rly, I remember reading in the basic rules, a long time ago, that two units couldn't share the same APC. I'm sure they'd of mentioned such an enterprising idea in the codex if the Tau had had it. Enkidu

What difference does it make? Since the Commander (or Ethereal) is an Independant Character (IC), if they are not in a unit, they may not be targeted if there is a friendly unit within 6" of them (unless they are the closest figure and within 12" of the enemy). It would be nice if GW cleared this up. -Bri Reply

Bri, my understanding of the codex is that the choice of a Drone Controller for a Commander does not make him a unit...as in needing to take a morale check if one drone dies, and a last-man-standing check if the second dies. Were that the case, I'd expect to be compensated
with extra points for adding drones to my Commander, as their addition
would turn an Independent Character who will never run away, into a unit
that has to pass a morale check at the 1st casualty,

ChazDaTaco[motty_brown@hotmail.com]. 12/20/2001 15:23 (12/23/2001 5:46) Hey everybody, Just so I know what the heck I'm doing when I get my Tau on Monday (WOOHOO!!), what is the best way to mix paint so you can apply it to the model? Also, I'm making some scenery, was doing it today, and I wanted to add a little Tau turret thingy... Possibly with some twin-linked pulse carbines, or plasma rifles, don't really wanna go overboard with it ;) Where would I go to find out how many points I should make it? Cheers to any responses

Mix paint? Do you mean to get a color that doesn't
come prepackaged? I like to make entire pots of the color, so that when
I come back later I don't have to spend 6 hours getting the same mix...
For the little defense turret, you can use the VDR to create an immobile vehicle of small or normal size (probably small), and then add weapons -- however, a list of point costs for the Tau weapons is not available yet. In the meantime, you could guess high, or use other races' weapons that are similar. VS

Ah-ha. That works fine for one-off models like
characters where they may need a color you may never need again...But if
you're mixing for a whole army, mix whole pots of the stuff. I think the
Mega-Paint set comes with 5 or 6 empty pots as well. I don't know if mail
order has them for sale seperately...
