Now on with the battle. The scenario is Patrol using the Nightfight rules. The battle is the first scenario of the Epsilon Eridani 4 campaign. Warboss Hedkruncha has invaded this agri world which fortunately had a Templar Crusade castle on it along with 1 IG unit and some militia. Hedkruncha's mob is advancing at night towards a small village while a Templar Recon Force is investigating the landing area. They run into each other at night. HedKruncha to his nobz "I smell 'umies" as he kicks one of his grots out of his way. "Boss, dis hole planet stinks of 'umies" his head nob replies. "Dese smell like beakie 'umies, send da Butcha's out ahead to scout dem out." Chaplain van Housen and his unit are advancing towards the unknown forces' landing zone. The Emperor's Sword claimed the honor of leading the formation so their rhino leads the way. "Contact! Contact! Enemy in sight! Orcs in the woods!" reports the lead rhino's gunner on the comlink. Chaplain van Housen could hear Brother Sergeant DeVries in the background ordering his driver to charge. "May the Emperor be with them... may He be with all of us tonight" he said to no-one in particular. The Templar's take the vow that allows them to hit on a 3+ but must always assault if within range. Deployment and Map: Orcs deploy and move first. The Orcs are at top or north edge of the table with the Templar opposite them. Only one troop squad is deployed from each army, all others are in reserve. The orcs choose Da Butcha's sluggaboy mob which is placed 12" in on their right flank in a woods. The table is 40" by 6' and both deploy on the long sides. Night rules are in effect. Game length is random. Reserve rules and Patrol victory conditions are in effect. The Templars choose the Emperor's Sword in their rhino as their lead squad, they are deployed opposite to the orcs, 12" in inside woods on their left flank, troops in their rhino. Turn one Orcs: Da Butcha's advance through the woods and try to shoot at the rhino with their heavy weapons but fail to spot them in the gloomy night. Turn one Templars: The E's Sword charge their rhino forward, dismount and fire into the orcs. 8 grots die, and the squad charges, "For the Emperor!". 3 grots and 6 orcs are killed, one Templar is killed in return. The orcs pass their morale and both sides move to btb. Turn two Orcs: The Kanz, the big gunz, the gretchin mob, the Warboss, and bodyguard enter and move 6" in. The bodyguard enters the ruins to their center. The Kanz, gretchin mob, and gunz enter behind the woods Da Butcha's deployed in on their right. There is no fire. The assault combat continues with the orcs killing 2 marines and the marines killing 4 grots and 3 orcs. The orcs fail their morale and retreat. The E's Sword pursues and wipes them out "Huzzah!" Turn two Templar: The whirlwind, the predator, the C's Escort w/Champ, the Chaplain, and the E's Fist enter. The whirlwind enters the woods where the E's Sword started. The Predator enters at the extreme left and moves 12" in. along the edge of the woods. The C's escort in their rhino move up 12" behind the E's Sword, who move back inside their rhino. The E's Fist with Chaplain move 12" up the center behind a hill in the center of the board. There was no fire this turn:( Warboss HedKruncha enters the ruins with his bodyguard and spots Da Beakie Killa's leading his Trukbusta's into the woods with the gretchin mob on his right. To his right front he hears the sounds of close combat from the far side of the woods. He kicks a grot and tells him "Fetch the rest o' da Boyz and tell 'em we'll have beakies for dinna." "Yes boss!" yells the grot and runs off to the rear. Hedkruncha hopes he won't run away and hide as he listens the the sounds ahead and pets his attack squig bigteef. "Soon my pet soon." Chaplin van Housen jetpacks forward with the E's Fist squad behind a hill to the right rear of the E's Sword's engagement. He gets reports from the E's Wrath that it is in firing position in the woods on his left. The E's Flame reports that it is moving forward to support the E's Sword. Honored Brother deHaviland reports that his squad is moving up to support also. The E's Sword's rhino reports that the orc squad they encountered was broken and destroyed when pursued. van Housen clicked his comlink open to all units and ordered "Forward in the name of the Emperor! Purge the alien scum!" Turn Three Orcs: The buggy, the shootaboyz, the truckboyz, and the warbikes enter. The bikes enter through the bodyguard into the ruins. The buggy enters 12" down the center with the trukkboyz. The shootaboyz, Da Meatgrinda's, enter behind the buggy and trukkboyz. The Beakie Killa's enter the woods on the Orc right followed by the Lil Snacks. The Big Gunz move to cover the fire lane between the woods at the right and the hill in the center. The Bikes attempt to hit the E's Swords' rhino and can't spot it:) Turn Three Templars: The E's Fire comes in down the center into some trenches and the E's Lightning comes in on the extreme left behind the E's Flame (Predator). The E's Flame moves 6" towards the center behind the two rhinos. The E's Swords' rhino moves 8" to the edge of the woods that Da Butchas came out of. The C's Escort's rhino moves forward 12" towards Da Banditos' warbikes. The E's Fist with the Chaplain jet 12" over the hill towards the bikes also. The C's Escort's rhino illuminates the warbikes with it's searchlight, deHaviland and one other fire out of the rhino and miss. The Fists and the Chaplain fire their bp's into the bikes and kill one. The E's Flame illuminates the Kanz and fires it's TL-lascanons at them destroying the one with the scorcha, "For the Emperor!" The E's Wrath fired its missile barrage at the ruins and kills 2 grots and wounds a nob. The Bodyguard pass their pin test. The Chaplain and the Fists assault the warbikes, "Charge!" They kill one and take no losses. The bikes pass their morale test! The Fists and the bikes move to btb. Turn Four Orcs: The remaining Beakie Stompa Kan advanced through the woods 6" towards the Sword's rhino. The zzapp gunz move again to better cover the fire lane between the woods and the hill. The Trukkboyz and the buggy advance down the center towards the E's Fire squad. The Lil Snacks move up with the Kan into the woods. The Kan fires it's TL-Rokkitlauncha at the Swords' rhino and destroy it killing one marine inside "Now where was that smoke launcher button":( The buggy and the trukk fire at the E's Fire and miss. The Warboss and bodyguard move up and fire into a few of the Fists not in btb and kill two of them. The Kan then assaults the survivors of the E's Sword and kills 2 of them with it's claw. The Sword's marines do no damage to the Kan in return. The Warboss and his bodyguard charge the Fists "WAAUGH!" Two Fists are killed and one grot, one wounded nob and one bike were killed in return. The bikes pass their morale test again as does the bodyguard! Everyone moves to btb contact. Turn Four Templars: The E's Shield fails to appear again, "Cowards!" The E's Fire advance towards the trukk and buggy. The C's Escort's rhino moves towards the Chaplain's melee and the squad dismounts with deHaviland. The E's Lightning advances towards the Kan and the Sword's melee. The E's Flame moves 6" towards the center hill. The E's Wrath fired it's barrage at the gunz and landed it's ordinance right on top of one gun wiping out it's 5 grot crew and wounding the Slava, "Bullseye!". They pass their pin test. The E's Fire shoots at the trukk and fail to see it. The Flame illuminates the Lil Snacks and fires it's stormbolter and TL-lascanons at them killing 3 grots, "Now that's marine marksmanship!" The C's Escort and deHaviland fire their bp's at a few unengaged grots in the bodyguard and kill 2. They then charge into the close combat. 2 nobs, 4 grots and one bike are killed and the orcs kill one Fist and two Escorts in return. The orcs all pass their morale tests again! "Lucky alien scum!" Sgt Devries of the E's Sword manages to destroy the Kan's claw with a powerfist after it kills one marine. Warboss HedKruncha sees chaos erupt all around him as his troops move up and pass him. Da Banditos roar out in front of his bodyguard kicking up dust and venting noxious fumes from their engines. An incoming missile barrage lands on part of his bodyguard killing some grots and wounding a nob. "It's gettin' pretty warm out here." he comments to his nobs. Then they see 10 plumes of fire and smoke fly up in front of them and 10 beakies land in front of the bikes and fire with their pistols and charge into the bikes. HedKruncha spots a skull-masked beakie leading them and points his attack squig at him and says "Kill bigteef kill!" He and his bodyguard then rush into the fray with the bikes and beakies "WAAAAAAAUGH!" Brother Chaplain van Housen jumped with the E's Fists over the hill to land in front of the orc warbikes, they fired their pistols and charged into the bikes striking left and right at the smoke belching bikes. At a pause in the action he switched his comlink to the Champion's Escort frequency and yelled "de Haviland, where are you?" He then spots 3 huge forms in mega-armor, and many other smaller ones approaching. "Get up here quick!" Turn Five Orcs: The Kamikaze trukkboyz move towards the E's Fire and dismount 3" away from them. The warbuggy moves out to the Fire's flank to enfilade their line. The Meatgrinda shootaboyz advance to support the trukk and buggy. The Lil Snaks advance slowly through the woods towards the Kan melee combat. The zzapp gun doesn't move. The Bodyguard, bikes and Kan remain in close combat. The zzapp gun fires at the C's Escort's rhino and overheats killing one grot krew! The Kamikaze's fire their sluggas and trukk big shoota into the E's Fire killing one marine. The buggy fires into the E's Fire and fails to wound. The Meatgrinda's fire their bigshoota and rokkitlaucha at the Fire and miss. The Kamikaze's charge into the E's Fire yelling, "Banzai!"?? killing 2 marines after losing 4 orcs. they pass their morale test. The Kan misses and Sgt DeVries of the Sword hits with his powerfist with a glancing blow that immobilizes the Kan "Give that man a medal!" In the huge melee in the Center, Chaplain van Housen kills a bike, several grots die, and one mega-armored nob is killed by deHaviland. The Warboss's squig, bigteef, is killed also by a powerfisted Escort. The Warboss angered over his pet's loss kills one marine in return as does one m-armored mekboy with his claw. The bodyguard and bike pass their morale test again! "Now that's just not right!" Turn five Templars: The E's Shield still fails to enter the battlefield! "I feel an inquisition coming on." The E's Lightning advances on the extreme left towards the Sword's position. Everyone else is either involved in melees or stands still. The Flame again illuminates the Lil Snaks and fires everything at them killing 3 grots again. The Lightning fires at the Snaks and their shots fall short. The E's Wrath fires it's missile barrage at the Snaks killing 4. The Snaks pass their pin test and morale test. The Escort's rhino illuminates and fires back at the zzapp gun killing one grot. The E's Fire moved it's unengaged p-gunner for a shot at the trukk and destroyed it. The Kan fails to wound anyone and Sgt DeVries finally administers the "coup de grace" and destroys the Kan with his powerfist. The Sword consolidates in the woods nearby. deHaviland challenges the Warboss to single combat and they square off against each other as the melee continues around them. deHaviland manages to wound the Warboss with his Black Sword and the Warboss misses in return. Chaplain van Housen wounds the biker nob. The Escort and the remaining Fists kill all the rest of the Bodyguard except for one m-armored nob who kills one assault marine in return. The warbike nob fails his morale test and retreats to the edge of the board. The Chaplain and others move to btb with the remaining mekboy and the Warboss. The E's Fire charged it's remaining unengaged marines into btb with the trukkboyz and killed 4 more of them while losing one neophyte. The Kamikaze's fail their morale test and fall back, the Fire pursues and destroys them, then consolidates, "Praise the Emperor!" Turn Six Orcs: The game ends due to the Random Game length rule:( The Templars win on points, but not by much. Aftermath Warboss HedKruncha was starting to get worried, his army was dissolving around him and dis fancy dressed dude in front of him was starting to get on his nerves. He was bleeding from a bad gash in his shoulder, the one with his dead squig attached. "Dere goin' to regret dat" he muttered to himself. Suddenly sheets of rain pelted down and a heavy wind blew up obscuring most everything around him. "Where is dat fancypants?" he yelled into the wind. Suddenly a massive figure loomed out of the murk and he recognized one of his mega-armored mekboys, Scarface. "Boss we gots to get outa here!" Scarface yelled at him. "Let's gather up da boyz dats left and head back to da ship" HedKruncha ordered. Brother Chaplain van Housen peered through the rain and windy gloom around him trying to spot any enemies left. He switched on his all units tactical frequency and ordered "All units consolidate on my position. I'll leave my channel open so you can home in on my location." As his Templars slowly joined him making their way through the lightening rain, a line of still black forms was being laid out near him. Eventually 20 bodies are laid out in front of him 17 initiates, one neophyte, and two rhino crewman. He said prayers over them committing their souls to the Emperor's care. Sgt DeVries reported to him and he gave him a hearty "Well done!" The late arriving Emperor's Shield finally showed up and he ordered, "Consider yourselves under arrest until we have time for an inquisition." He directed them to take care of their fallen brothers and they carefully loaded the still forms into the remaining rhino for transport back to the castle. Brother van Housen then reported their victory to Crusade HQ and requested additional units be sent out to pursue the defeated orcs. This campaign will continue, stay tuned for further reports. Lessons learned: For this scenario attacking quickly worked well for the Templars as the orcs were not prepared to deal with it effectively. Searchlights are very effective in night missions of course. The whirlwind and the predator were very effective as heavy support platforms. I should have used the smoke launchers on the rhinos to protect them better. Heavy bolter sponsons would probably be better and cheaper on the predator against orcs. Any comments or criticisms are welcome. (BT 14th Crusade & IG) vs Orcs vs DE Battle Report This is the second battle of the Epsilon Eridani 4 campaign. BigSquigg HedKrusha's Waaugh is sneaking up on an IG garrison at a fuel dump. He needs the fuel and supplies badly to restock his depleted units. Unfortunately for both sides, the Dark Eldar Black Claw Cabal has decided to pull a slave raid on the same town that the IG garrison is defending. The IG garrison under Lt. Jamison call on the Black Templar Keep for reinforcements. This is a modified "Take and Hold" scenario with sentry, reserves (modified), infiltration, nightfight and fortification rules. The IG garrison sets up first with trenches, sentries, and one bunker defending the objective, a fuel dump in the center of the south map edge 12"x12". The board is 40"x72". The Orc Waaaugh has one mob of Kommandos which sets up last using the infiltration set-up rules (anywhere on the board at least 18" from an enemy unit). All other units of the 3 forces are in reserve. The Dark Eldar force has the same victory conditions as the Orcs, but not allied with them, and enters using the reserve rules on the western map edge starting on turn 2. The Orc reserve units deploy on the northern map edge using the standard reserve rules. The Black Templar 14th Crusade relief force uses the reserve rules to enter behind the IG deployment area starting 4 turns after the alarm is raised (see sentry rules). The game length is unlimited. You wants us to rush 'em?" Hedkrusha replies after some difficulty, his mekboy had to turn his comlink to transmit for him, "No youse wait for me an da boyz to join you, we'll rush em togedda, an keep quiet!" he ordered. He then ordered his nob with the jumppack, "Go tell the walkin boyz and da Kanz to hurry up and join me here, an tell da Red Raida's and da Speedo's to keep dere engin's quiet, wez be sneekin up on dem." The Orcs automatically have first turn. DE move second. Turn One Orcs: The Kommandos sneak 6" towards the IG compound. No firing occurs. Turn One DE: nothing, everything is in reserve. Turn One IG: The 10 IG sentries see nothing. Turn Two Orcs: HedKrusha and Bodyguard, the BigBooma's, the Dakkaboyz, and the Krusha's enter at the center of the north board edge and move 6" towards the IG position. The Kommando's sneak 6" closer also. No firing occurs "Wese be sneekin". Archon Darkclaw sneered as he read the report from his ravager tank. Orc force moving north to south towards the target village. Darkclaw spoke to himself "Those greenskin monkeighs won't beat me to my prize!" He switched his comlink to all units and ordered "Attack the greenskins now!" Turn Two DE: All of the DE forces enter on the top portion of the western map edge. The ravager and scourges move 12 " towards the orc horde, all others move 6". The ravager fires one dark lance and hits a Kanon crew wiping out the 5 grots. The scourges fire their splinter canon at them also and kill 2 more. The Talos fires it's talos sting at the Dakkaboyz and fails to see them in the night. One warrior squad fires it's two splinter canons at the Big Gunz and kills three more grots and wounds the Slava. The other warrior squad with the blaster fails to see it's target. No assault occurs. Lt. Jamison woke up with the sounds of heavy weapons and splinter rifles in his ears. "Dark Eldar Pirates!" he yelled at his awakening guardsmen in the bunker. He had heard these weapons before when he was a young boy and the pirates had raided his city on another planet. "Call the Templar Keep and ask for reinforcements. Then call HQ and report the attack." he ordered his communications sergeant. He knew that the Templars were the only force quick enough to get here in time. Turn two IG: The sentries fail to see the Kommandos and the rest of the IG force run to their positions. No firing or assaulting. The attack is reported to Guard HQ and the Templars. Turn 3 Orcs: Da Red Raida's, Beakiestompa's, Da Flama's and Speedos enter into the DE formation. The Speedos dismount. The Dakkaboyz move towards the DE. The last kanon moves into the nearby woods to get a LOS on the DE forces. The Warboss and bodyguard move towards the DE. The Krushas move towards them also but their LOS is blocked by the woods. The Kommandos advance towards the IG. The Kommandos fire at an IG squad killing 5 guardsmen. They pass their morale test. Da Flama's fire at the Ravager melting off one d-canon and killing a scourge in the flames. Da Speedos fire at the Scourges and wipe them out. The Bodyguard fire at a warrior squad and fail to see them. The Dakkaboyz fire at the Ravager and do no damage. The Red Raida's fire into a warrior squad killing 7 causing them to fail their morale and run to the edge of the board. Da BeakieStompas fire into the ravager and do no damage. The Red Raida's assault the warrior squad they broke and wipe them out with no losses using the Psychoblasta rule, then they consolidate. The Flama's assault the ravager and do no damage. The bodyguard assaults the Talos causing two wounds while losing one nob and 2 gretchin. They pass their morale test. Turn 3 DE: The Archon moves towards the Talos. The warrior squad moves 6" towards the trukkboyz. The Ravager stands still and fires both dark lances at the sluggaboyz killing 6 of them and they pass their morale test. The Archon fires at the trukkboyz and kills one. The warrior squad fires at the trukkboyz and kills 5. The trukkboys fail their morale and retreat to the board edge. The Archon charges the trukkboyz and they fail their morale test and are destroyed. The Talos kills one nob and one grot and then is destroyed by HedKrusha's claw. Turn 3 IG: No movement. Both squads and the Command section fire at the Kommandos. The Command section fails to see them, the squads kill 5 of them and they fail morale and retreat. Turn 4 Orcs: The burnaboyz back up and fire at the ravager destroying it. The kanon moves through the woods towards the IG. The shootaboyz and Kans move into the woods towards the IG. The warbuggy comes in and moves towards the IG. The Warboss moves towards the Archon. The trukk stands still. The bikes move towards the last warrior squad. The sluggaboyz move towards the warrior squad. The kommandos regroup and consolidate. The trukk, bikes and sluggaboyz fire into the warrior squad killing 7, the remainder fail morale and fall back to the board edge. The bodyguard shoots at the Archon and fail to wound him. The bikes charge the warrior squad, they fail morale and are destroyed "deja vu". Warboss HedKrusha looks around him at the shattered talos and ravager. Dark eldar and orc bodies litter the ground all around him. He spots a dark figure merging into the shadows as it moves away from him. "Black pansy gits!" he shouts to his bodyguard remnants. "Gather up da boyz and lets get our supplies from da 'umies." Archon Darkclaw fades back into the shadows vowing revenge for the loss of his command. As he plans excruciating tortures for the greenskin warboss, he smiles wickedly. Turn 4 IG: All squads remain in place. They all attempt to fire at the Kans. The command section and Squad One fail to spot them in the night. Squad Two fires it's autocanon at one Kan and destroys it. The Black Templar reserves cannot enter until turn 6. Turn 5 Orcs: All Orc forces move towards the IG position. The remaining Kan fires it's TL-Rokkit at the bunker and misses. The warbikes "Da Red Raida's" and buggy fire at one of the IG squads killing 2 guardsmen, and they pass their morale check. No other units are in range or LOS. Turn 5 IG: One squad fires at the bikes and kills one with the autocanon. The other squad fires at the Kanon and fails to see it. The command section fires at the remaining Kan and immobilize it. Turn 6 Orcs: All units except the Kanon and the immobilized Kan move towards the IG position. The Kanon fails to see the IG bunker and can't shoot. The remaining Kan fires it's rokkit launcher at the bunker but fails to penetrate it. The Dakkaboyz fire at an IG squad but fail to see them. The warbikes and buggy again fire at the same squad as before and kill 3 more guardsmen who break and run for the board edge. The trukk fires at the other squad and misses. The Kommando's fire at an IG squad and fail to wound anyone. No one is in assault range yet. Turn 6 IG & Templar: The Templar relief force arrives in the nick of time. The land speeder squadron, the attack bike, the tornado, the Marshall, and one assault squad, "Emperor's Sabre" arrive. The IG forces remain in place except for the retreating squad which reaches the board edge. The land speeders and tornado fire into the bikes killing 2. The IG fire at and destroy the immobilized Kan with their autocanons. The attack bike fires at the Kommandos killing one, they fail morale and retreat again. The Marshall and assault squad fire at the remaining bikes and kill one with a plasma pistol, and then charge the nob biker survivor. The Marshall carves him up with his claws, and they consolidate. Turn 7 Orcs: The Kanon stays still. The Warboss, sluggaboyz, trukk, buggy, and shootaboyz move towards the IG. The trukk and buggy fire at the landspeeder squadron and destroy 2. The shootaboyz fire at the tornado destroying it also. The sluggaboyz attempt to shoot the land speeder but fail to see it. The burna boyz are out of range as is the bodyguard. The kanon fires and it's shell scatters over the fuel dump igniting a flaming huge explosion. "Stupid gits!" A strength 10 AP3 8" radius explosion kills 5 guardsmen in the trenches and stuns the occupants of the bunker. No assault occurs. Turn 7 IG & Templar: The Champion and his escort arrive in their rhino illuminated by a raging conflagration in the fuel dump. The IG survivors in the bunker are stunned from the blast. The Marshall and the assault squad fall back towards the rhino as does the attack bike. The speeder and bike fire at the trukk and destroy it. No assualt occurs. Turn 8 Orcs: With their objective destroyed there is no point in continuing the attack so the Orcs withdraw all remainig forces. The game ends. Warboss HedKrusha gazed angrily at the blazing wreck of the Imperial Outpost. He turned and kicked his banawava grot a good six feet and it made him feel a little better. "When I get my hands on dat Kanon crew they'll wish they fired themselves into that fuel dump!" he screamed at his bodyguard. "Round up da boyz an hed back to da barge" he ordered. Marshall LeBlade jumppacked over to his destroyed speeders and started pulling wounded crewmen from them. The light from the burning fuel dump illuminated him. He switched his comlink to deHaviland's frequency and ordered, "deHaviland check for survivors in the Guard camp." His assault marines were helping their wounded brothers now. He reported the situation to Templar HQ and started planning how he would pursue the Orc attack force. To be continued.... by Marshall Hans Ubrecht
