The Sanguinius Banner
creating an army standard

The Sanguinius Banner
Inspired by an image on a calendar,
I actually painted the Sanguinius and red background. the Blood Angels symbol is a decal :-)

Further banners were also made from
digital copies of the painting - which were then
modified even further via my graphics program
(PhotoImpact 6), I thought that adding some well recognized iconography (the BA wings and Death Company icon) would help lend to the feel of this being a greatly honored
Chapter Battle Banner. The final banner (which you see here below) was printed out at high quality onto HP premium photo paper glossy - it captures a really high level of quality for all the subtle colors :-)  I then painted the edges and back black for a uniform appearance.

How YOU can make a banner!
Below is a section describing in detail how I painted the banner - I hope it will help inspire others to try to paint some of their own banners! It's kind of scary at first, but it is lots of fun and you're really proud of your work afterwards - because you did it! :-)

The Making of the Sanguinius Banner

I tweaked the colors here (just a pinch with a graphics program) so this image would come closer to representing the true color of the banner (for some reason most of these graphics are a little on the "not as red as it should be" side of things) ~ go figure :-)

Two Death Company Marines for scale.

and on an interesting note (just when I thought I was all done!) I noticed Sanguinius' right sleeve wasn't hanging properly so I repainted that sleeve on the master painting, and revamped all the graphics (ugh) but I'm pleased with the result :-)

Making Banners in General

Many people have asked how I made the banners like this - it's easy, I used a graphics program and printed the image on cardstock! Cut out the banner, glue it to the banner pole. I paint the edges of the banner black (and the banner pole too). Now in my case the Blood Angel Symbol never comes out red enough so I go over it with red ink (painted with a brush) and whamm it's a nice lovely blood red). and THAT is how you can make fun banners :-)
